Castor oil's documented use dates back to around 4,000 B.C. Castor beans have been found in Egyptian tombs, and the oil is named in the Ebers Papyrus (1550 B.C.) — one of the oldest surviving medical texts in the world. From there it travelled. Ancient Greece and Rome. Persia. India, where it appears in Ayurvedic texts. China, where it entered Traditional Chinese Medicine. Few substances have been carried across so many cultures for so long. In Latin, castor oil was called Palma Christi — the Palm of Christ — a name that says a great deal about how it was regarded. Warm oil, soft cloth, a few still minutes lying down. The ritual has changed remarkably little in six thousand years. In the twentieth century it found a new audience in America, largely through Edgar Cayce, who wrote about castor oil packs often enough that they became closely associated with his name.
