Castor oil's documented use dates back to around 4,000 B.C. Castor beans have been found in Egyptian tombs, and the oil is named in the Ebers Papyrus (1550 B.C.) — one of the oldest surviving medical texts in the world. From there it travelled. Ancient Greece and Rome. Persia. India, where it appears in Ayurvedic texts. China, where it entered Traditional Chinese Medicine. Few substances have been carried across so many cultures for so long. In Latin, castor oil was called Palma Christi — the Palm of Christ — a name that says a great deal about how it was regarded.
